Audio Channel Monitoring in the master section - question

Thanks PG. That explains it, and sort of what I guessed later after seeing peak levels above zero for #3. So it’s:

#2 Mix to Mono = (L + R) / 2
#3 Mix to Mono (L-R) = (L - R)
#6 Mid = (L + R) / 2
#7 Side = (L - R) / 2

It seems a little odd to me to present #3 and #7 at different levels, even though they’re the same. I would be more confused by that rather than less, if I knew even less than I do (which isn’t much).

Confirmed

Agreed.

Just a suggestion, but it might make more sense if #6 & #7 were removed:

ORIGINAL:

  1. Default Channels
  2. Mix to Mono
  3. Mix to Mono (L-R)
  4. Left Channel Only
  5. Right Channel Only
  6. Mid Channel Only
  7. Side Channel Only

SUGGESTED:

  1. Default Channels
  2. Mix to Mono (Mid Channel Only) - this channel is -6db to prevent peaking
  3. Mix to Mono (L-R) (Side Channel Only) - this channel is -6db to match (M)
  4. Left Channel Only
  5. Right Channel Only

Sorry, I disagree. Most users don’t know the underlying maths. Hence it’s better to have separate explicit options.

I think, Philippe is right!

I understand and no matter what you decide, I respect your decision. Still, while this may help users who don’t know the maths, it can be very confusing for those who do understand the maths.

Why not this?:

  1. Default Channels
  2. Mix to Mono (Mid Channel Only)
  3. Mix to Mono (L-R) (Side Channel Only)
  4. Left Channel Only
  5. Right Channel Only

“Side Channel Only” is “Mix to Mono (L-R) minus 6dB”
to match how M/S is handled in the rest of WaveLab.

I agree - minus 6db is a good idea… But the only reason for the extra option would be if someone wants to hear L-R without the 6db reduction. I don’t know how important that is to people, but if it is important, it could always be like this below.

This nice thing about this, is that people who DO know the maths will not be confused, and people who DO NOT know the maths will not be confused either.

  1. Default Channels
  2. Mix to Mono [(L+R)/2] Mid Channel Only
  3. Mix to Mono [(L-R)/2] Side Channel Only
3a) Mix to Mono (L-R) Side Channel Only
  4. Left Channel Only
  5. Right Channel Only

OR

  1. Default Channels
  2. Mix to Mono [(L+R)/2] Mid Channel Only
  3. Mix to Mono [(L-R)/2] Side Channel Only
  4. Left Channel Only
  5. Right Channel Only
