Audio cracklings with a single track

Hello,

I’m having major audio issues when using Dorico. With a buffer size of 256, the sound starts crackling like crazy with a single simple piano. If I increase it de 1024 things improve but I guess it will start again as soon as I start adding more instruments.

I have an AMD Rizen 9 9900x cpu with 62 gigs of DDR5 RAM, my audio interface is a RME Babyface pro. In Cubase and other DAWs it can handle 20 heavy synths with effects on a 128 buffer like its a walk in the park. I don’t get how this behaves so differently from Cubase since I suppose the audio engines must be pretty similar. Is it a bug specific to my installation? Am I missing some obvious setting?

What kind of VSTinstruments are you using mainly? Which ones do you use most frequently?
And is ASIO-guard enabled in the Dorico preferences (go to the Play tab and scroll all the way down and unfold the Advanced Options)

I was simply using the default Halion piano loaded with one of the demo scores. Tried to switch it to Pianoteq, same result. Asio guard was enabled by default.
