I have been using Dorico for around 2 years and have never had any problems, until I switched to a new computer, and it would not playback any string instruments. I tried deleting and redownloading the VSTA audio engine, but now Dorico will not start at all, only giving the message ‘audio engine died’.
I’ve tried reinstalling Dorico, restarting my Mac, and using the Activity Monitor to close both VSTAudio Manager and Dorico, and it still won’t start! How can I fix this? Thanks!
There isn’t a separate installer for the Audio Engine – it’s part of the Dorico app installer. So make sure you’ve downloaded and installed the right thing.
I would reinstall Dorico from the Steinberg Download Assistant. Then see if that starts.
In order to rule out plug-ins as the cause of your problem, please go to
Macintosh HD/Library/Audio/Plug-ins
and there rename temporarily the folders VST and VST3 to _VST and _VST3 and by that hiding away the plug-ins from the VSTAudioEngine. When you then start Dorico, does it start up normally? If so, then one or several plgug-ins are the troublemakers.
If you can boot up Dorico until its menue appears, then please choose Help > Create Diagnostic Report. That creates a zip file on your Desktop which you please post to a reply here. From the contained log files, etc. I can also deduce quite a bit.
Hi! Thank you for the help. I tried renaming the folders and it still gave me the error message and didn’t let me get past the opening screen, so unfortunately I can’t create a diagnostic report. Is there another way for me to send you information? Thank you!
Okay, thanks, then please zip up the following folders and send me:
~/Library/Application\ Support/Steinberg/Dorico\ 5
~/Library/Preferences/Dorico\ 5\ AudioEngine
From the following 2 directories copy only the wanted items:
~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/Dorico*.*
~/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/VSTAudioEngine*.*
The Tilde character at the front of each directory means, that it starts from your home directory. I hope you understand what I want to say. In case of doubt, please ask. Thanks
Hi, what @benwiggy replied worked for getting it open-- but now my original problem, which made me delete & reinstall everything, still stands. Some instruments (specifically the violincello) won’t playback. I suspect I just need to download something more, but do you have any reccomendations? Thank you.
At start-up, does Dorico complaint about missing contents files?
It is best if you download and install all the sound files asyou can find in the Dorico dowliad area of the Steinberg Download Assistant.
Hi @tmhb936, and now that you can open Dorico, please do from the main menu Help > Create Diagnostic Report. The corresponding zip file please post here. Thanks
Thanks for the data @tmhb936 .
At first sight it all looks okay. Could you please also post a Dorico which exposes the from you described behaviour? If you don’t want to post it publicly, please send directly to u dot stoermer at steinberg dot de. Thanks
