Audio files - guide/playback

On Finale, it was possible to import a single audio file (.wav) in that program’s “studio” view, and have it appear and playback. Is there a similar functionality in Dorico? I’m still running MacOS Sonoma on an M1 Max MBP, but a colleague with identical equipment is running MacOS Sequoia and this would appear to break that functionality in Finale. I’m very happily transitioning to Dorico for everything notation-wise, so this is worth an inquiry here. Searching seems to reveal this is to be delivered in future updates, but I welcome any information. If not…

1.) Its seems some Dorico users state this can be worked around by important a video with audio-only in terms of content. 2.) Some Dorico users state that audio can be played back as a sample, and 3.) If this isn’t available in Dorico, is this available in Cubase? For example, if I make my notation file in Dorico, and exported it to Cubase, could I then mate the playback file and the notation file?

Any input is welcome.

No, one must still create a video to set up an external audio track in Dorico 6. The “sample-entering” feature is really more designed to add shorter sampled patterns (such as a drum pattern) and does not replicate Finale’s audio track feature.

I have created 2 other methods for playing back audio files synchronized to Dorico’s transport:

  • a PlugData patch
  • a HALion lua script

*the HALion script was created with the FULL version of HALion (not sure if it works with Sonic or SE versions)

If anyone is interested in trying them I am willing to share, but I may need to make the GUIs a little more user-friendly and write a short ReadMe.

There is also the option of using TXL -timecode plugin and sync Dorico’s playback with a DAW like Logic Pro. It is a litle bit of work to set it up, but when it works you can edit the audio in the DAW at the same time.
