Audio files not loading since 15.0.20 update

Since installing latest Cubase 15.0.02 update some audio files went missing from the project/audio folders and some were random mixdowns or edits from other folders, some project/audio folders were completely empty and some were OK.

I replaced them with back-ups and they showed up in the pool but did not open in the project.

I have re-installed Cubase, restarted PC etc., copied to different drives and tried opening from there and from external hard drive. Same problem every time. Sometimes Cubase starts to open and then closes. Sometimes shows error message and won’t open or close. Sometimes asks to browse for missing files sometimes not. Same problem either way.

Any advice appreciated.

Hi,

Sorry to hear about this. Let’s try to get this sorted:

1. Check the Pool for missing files

  • Open the Pool (Media > Pool or Ctrl/Cmd+P).
  • Look for files with a question mark (?) in the Status column — these are the files Cubase considers missing.

2. Use Find Missing Files

  • Go to Media > Find Missing Files.
  • In the Resolve Missing Files dialog, try:
    • Browse Folder — point it to your project’s Audio folder (or backup location).
    • Search Options — for a wider search across your drives.

3. Reconnect from backups
Since you mentioned replacing files with backups:

  • Make sure the backup audio files have the exact same filenames as the originals. Cubase references files by name.
  • Place the backup files in the project’s Audio subfolder.
  • Then use Media > Find Missing Files again — Cubase should detect them.

4. Reconstruct edits
If any of the missing files were created through audio processing (edits stored in the Edits folder), Cubase may be able to reconstruct them from the original audio files if those originals are available.

5. Check project folder integrity
Navigate to your project folder in your file manager and verify:

  • The Audio subfolder exists and contains .wav files.
  • The Edits subfolder is intact.
  • File permissions haven’t changed (right-click > Properties).

If files show up in the Pool but events remain silent in the project, try selecting the events and using Audio > Bounce Selection to re-create them from the Pool references.

If none of this helps, please share more details about what you see in the Pool and any error messages — that will help narrow down the issue.

Many thanks Martin Jirsak for that detailed response.

I will try all that later and get back.
