At present I am going through the onboard ASIO drivers for the MIDI keyboard and USB audio mic. When I upgrade to an audio interface for when I get a real mic does that replace/bypass the ASIO drivers or work in conjunction with them. I am getting quite a bit of latency right now and just wondering if that issue would be solved also.

Most interfaces will have a dedicated ASIO driver supplied by the manufacturer. You will select this to use within Cubase. Be sure to check for the most current version on their website. And yes this “should” allow you to achieve lower latency than the generic drivers.
You can try out www.asio4all.com in the meantime, to allow for low latencies on your current drivers.
