Audio Outputs on Instrument vs Rack Instrument Tracks

Cubase 15.0.30

Windows 11

I use Cubase in conjunction with Vienna Ensemble Pro. In the past I have typically used “Rack Instruments” as opposed to “Instrument Tracks”. They’re a bit more cumbersome and you can’t import the Rack instrument into a new session. Midi shows up but no instrument.

OTOH when enabling separate audio outputs you can control all parameters (volume, pan, etc…) from each audio output with a midi controller via Quick Controls.

On an “Instrument Track” the “child” audio outputs from each audio output cannot be controlled independently from the main instrument track with a midi controller (volume, pan, etc…).

You can write automation by mousing the fader but not with a controller. Any automation defaults to the main track.

You can work around this by feeding the outputs individually into a Group Track associated with the “child” but it’s a bit of a pain.

Am I missing something? Thanks!

More cumbersome than Track Instruments?

I’m not sure what you mean by “MIDI shows up but no instrument.”

If you find yourself adding the same Rack Instruments every time you start a new session, you should just create a template that includes the Rack Instruments (and preferred presets) and use that for new sessions. I can’t think of any reason you’d need to add/remove Rack Instruments just to get started with a new session.

That’s cumbersome

Yes, it’s possible to use the same Instrument Track for multiple MIDI tracks–but it’s not better than using one Rack Instrument for all associated MIDI tracks.

Yes. Unless there’s something you can’t do without Track Instruments, just use Templates and Rack Instruments with (or without) presets.
