Audio Performance meter closes automatically on Windows

I have my Audio Performance Meter open (by pressing F12)

Every time I go from the file menu to Studio-> Studio Setup then press ok to close Studio Setup the Audio Performance Meter will close.

I would assume a cute little bug and not by design?

Yep, happens here too on both Cubase and Nuendo 13 (on separate machines).

Do you have “Always on Top” checked in the performance meter? Not sure if that will work (I’m on 12 pro)

I don’t think it’s a bug, but a part of the changes to make Cubase/Nuendo window behaviour more like a standard Windows application.

As a result, many of the redesigned Windows will disappear to the background - and can be recalled to the front via cycling with the Ctrl-tab key command.

And as @Easto already suggested, the trick for this window - and several other similar one’s like the Floating Rack (F11) - is to right click and enable “always on top”.

That should get those windows’ behaviour back to what we’re used to from prior Cubase/Nuendo versions.

One benefit of the new windowing behaviour:

When disabling “always on top”, those Windows do not disappear from view when switching to another app (e.g. alt-tab away from Cubase/Nuendo). – I find this very useful when I want to read a user manual for a plugin while also still seeing its window.

Or when I want to write something in an external text editor while looking at a plugin GUI.

Or for having more control over screen captures, like showing a plugin GUI next to a browser window in a single screen capture. e.g.

This is not the case, at least regarding the performance meter. It doesn’t get lost behind another window, it simply disappears off the desktop when the Studio Setup menu is closed. Doesn’t happen with any other menu windows… only Studio Setup.
F12 brings it back.

I may have finally been able to reproduce what you described.:

  • If at least a part of the Performance Meter window is outside the boundaries of the main Cubase Project window, it disappears entirely when closing the Studio settings window.

  • If the Performance Meter window is fully within the boundaries of the main Cubase Project window, the behaviour is like I described earlier.

In either case, setting that window to “always on top” keeps it around.

No, it still happens here regardless of where the perf window is. Here’s a video showing the behaviour.

Perf Meter Disappears

It’s a minor issue but it’s quite obviously a bug. Always on Top is not a useful solution.

Interesting! – Can you try one more thing? One difference I noticed in your video vs my testing was, that I always use a key command (not the menu item) to bring up the Studio Settings dialog. Could that explain the difference in what we’re seeing?

And when I do it that way, the Audio Performance Window seems so stick around if it’s sitting within the Project Window boundaries - even when “always on top” is not selected.

CubaseAudioPerfWindowTest

I tried this using a key command for the studio setup window:

  1. If the perf window is in free desktop space, it will disappear when I hit OK to close the studio setup window.
  2. If the perf window is partly or fully over the project window, it stays put when I hit OK on studio setup.

Here’s the wierd thing… if after 2 above I then drag the perf window back to the open desktop space again and hit OK on studio setup, the perf window does not disappear. This condition will continue for as long as the project is open. When closed the condition is reset.
All of the above occurs only when opening studio setup with a key command.

@Armand - This thread was prematurely closed as solved. This is actually a bug and should be on the tracking list.

Thanks for confirming the interesting weirdness.

Obviously I can’t speak for Steinberg and their priorities or the insides of Cubase/Nuendo code. But my old software development spider senses (from being a software developer a long time ago) are tingling that this may be a transitionary issue, due to the fact that the Studio Setup dialog window appears to be from the old windowing code and the Audio Performance window is part of the recently re-architected code base.

If the Studio Setup is already on the list to be code refreshed similar to many other already re-done windows, this may resolve itself in that context.

Just curious: What do you hate about using “always on top” for this particular use case?

Yep, it’s entirely possible.

I don’t hate it. The performance window hovers around in the bottom left corner so we can keep an eye on it if required. But over the course of a day other windows get dragged over it and moved around.
I simply don’t want the perf window to be on top of anything else and possibly obstructing the view.

Have you tried it for a while with that option on? To me it seems like with that option enabled, it behaves pretty much the same as it was in Cubase 12 and before.
