Audioconnections - Reordering, multiple entries

Regarding Audio Connections – Feature Requests / Handling Improvements

After years of using Nuendo/Cubase, I have a few observations and wishes regarding the Audio Connections window:

  1. Preset Display: When loading a project, the currently active preset for inputs and outputs is not displayed / remembered. This is inconvenient and should be corrected.

  2. Entry Management: Over time, entries accumulate in the list, leading to a suboptimal order. It should be possible to sort or move entries manually according to user preference.

  3. Automatic Port Assignment: When creating multiple consecutive mono or stereo channels (e.g., 7 or even more channels), it would be very helpful to specify a start port so that subsequent channels are automatically assigned according to the driver’s order of I/O ports (e.g. analog, aes, adat, madi, …)

  4. Preset Saving: Currently, when saving a preset, the dialog only provides an empty input field for a name. It would be more practical to also show a list of existing presets, which allows them to be selected with the mouse (similar to Windows Explorer). It should allow for easy selection of existing entries and to modify them as needed. Having to remember the exact preset names is cumbersome.

  5. Preset Deletion: Similarly, deleting a preset requires manually typing its name into an empty field. If you select “remove” without typing, nothing happens. This is unintuitive and error-prone (similar handling issues exist in program settings handling).

After all these years, it is surprising that such basic usability issues have not been addressed. There are hundreds of new, cool, features, yet critical workflow improvements in “basic handling” sadly remain unoptimized.

Would be very nice if this could be improved.
Many thanks upfront.

I wholely agree with points 4 and 5. The process of preset creation / deletion / renaming in various parts of Cubase / Nuendo is clunky and needs a refresh.

@steve has replied to you elsewhere about feature requests. This is primarily a user forum. Add the feature request tag and you’ll more likely get the eye of someone from Steinberg.

Thanks, added feature request tag.

None, of what is requested is probably simple, and looking at V13 to V14, the drive is still on to modernise the UI and associated dialogs so my understanding would be, that Steinberg would be prioritising the latter.

To address this/these particular feature request(s), firstly, when you delete preferences, all of your i/o routings are deleted as well, including any “presets” that are saved, and that first would need to be addressed, i.e., persistent preset management in regard to Audio Connections, is how I see the situation there but all of those points are valid of course, were the developers to look into that area of the application.

Great ideas, they are relevant to other windows as well. IIRC it is either in a plugin window OR the various preference windows.. overwriting a preset also means having to type it.. very basic stuff to have implemented consistently. Not saying it is easy, just something you’r expect to have boiled down after 14 versions.
