Audios disappeared in project

Hi all,

I have the problem that all the audio has disappeared in a project. The markers (names of the audio) are still there, and the colored markings are still there, but there is no audio. The colored fields are simply empty.

Is it just a matter of settings, or is the file defective? How can I restore it? Because no matter which backup I open, the audio has disappeared.

Please HELP

Additional Information:

In this screenshot you can see, where the audios should be… :face_with_spiral_eyes:

Can you post some screenshots showing your Project Window and also the Pool.

Apparently the audio files are missing in the Audio subfolder of the project folder.

They could also be in other places, if they were imported without checking the right box in the import dialog.

Hi Raino,

thank you for you reply. I added a screenshot. I hope can see what I mean. What do you mean with “Pool”?

Hi - thank you for your answer. I’ve checked all save bak, back to July and in ALL possible folders and subfolders… no matter which one I open, the lines are missing.

Maybe there is a setting I don’t know?!

I am not a professional yet in handling Cubase and still learning :see_no_evil:

Okay, I found single automatically saved .wave files in my folder (Pool ?!). So, they still exist at my Computer. But why have they disappeared or been hidden in my project?

It’s the window that contains and manages all the audio/video files related to the active project. It is usually opened with the Media > Open pool Window command.

Could you please post a screenshot of your Pool window?

Good idea, but the “Stimme” track doesn’t look like it was imported, rather recorded.

Aaah, I found the Pool of Cubase

I see that the “Wellenform”, in your screenshot “Image” is empty. What have I done??

This reflects the missing audio files!
Would you mind to post another shot where the paths (“Pfad” Spalte) on the right are also visible?

A huge mess…

I’m not absolutely sure of what I’m saying, as I never saw it in the Pool, but the [???] prefix that appears before all the paths displayed suggests that these files are actually unretrievable. From which, the .cpr file points to files that no longer exists : you are for a careful exploration of your system, in an attempt to retrieve all the audio files that are missing and import each of them in the pool.

As much as possible, we should keep things as simple as possible : a folder per project with its dedicated Audio subfolder in it, which is created by default each time a new project is created and a folder is set for it…

Something new every now and then  But why does this always only happen to me?! :see_no_evil:

Fortunately, it’s a file that I use privately for all kinds of demo recordings and not for a current customer project.

I only have a vague idea how I COULD have messed up the file. Maybe because I saved the same project again… Or because I didn’t close the program properly in the evening after saving it… more often?!

So I unterstand that I have to retrieve all single audio files then… Hmpf… I was hoping that I had simply changed something in the settings that I didn’t know about.

I will be more careful in future.

Thank you so much for all the help I’ve got from you all. Thank you.

Allow me another little hint:

[1] In the context of this thread, there is a pitfall in Cubase concerning the command Save as…. This command does NOT copy the audio files that are in the Audio subfolder of the original project! Only the project file (.cpr) with references to the audio files is copied, but the references point into the original project folder. So if you blithely save a project under a new name and then delete the original project (assuming you have copied everything anyway), you are suddenly left without any audio files! Maybe that’s what happened to you… So if you want to create a full copy of a project, you’ll have to use the Back up Project… function. This will copy all the files living in the project folder (and even external references, see [2]).

[2] Another pitfall is to have references to media files outside the project folder in your project (recognizable by an X in the Status column of the pool). Whenever these external media files happen to be moved or deleted, the file reference in the project file is also void. Nice thing: Back up Project… does save these files in the copy, too.

[3] Conclusion: In any case, please be careful when moving or deleting files!

Yeeees, that was most likely the case, even though I deliberately did not delete it but only saved it again.

Thank you! That is a very good hint :grimacing:
