In Cubase, it is possible to audition Halion sounds without loading them. I take it this is not possible in Dorico? It would be very handy when using Halion instruments that have hundreds of sound presets.
I presume you are talking about HALion Sonic 7, Juhani.
Yes, you can, both using the standalone version (if you have installed it, or even loading the interface in Play Mode (the gear for instrument settings), then searching for the instrument you want and auditioning it at will, using the keyboard of HS7. You can also test your loaded instrument in an empty slot, with your music if you want.
Yes, Halion Sonic 7. But the sound can’t be auditioned without loading it into the slot (as you have done in your screenshot), can it? Merely selecting it does not let me hear it on the HS7 keyboard. Should it?
To hear a sound you always have to load it into a slot: you can do it also in HS7 without Dorico if you have the standalone interface installed.
No, there’s this new (?) feature in HS7 that allows you to audition the instruments without loading them (see video). Apparently this does not work in Dorico. https://youtube.com/shorts/VBDLQy_CONY?si=cKYF9Hr6qEpUH1gC
Actually no, it’s a new feature of Cubase, not of HALion Sonic. Because what actually happens in Cubase is, that it will indeed secretly in the back load an instance of the VSTinstrument and patch it up so you can audition the sound.
You can see that in the Plug-in Manager. Look at the respective VSTinstrument and have a look at the instance counter; although from the project’s point of view the VSTinstrument is not loaded, yet, the instance counter is already up by 1.
And right, Dorico does not have such feature. At least not yet…
Ah, I see. Thank you for the information.
