Automate adding a channel to a group

Newbie question. Cubase 15. I have a tune where I have a track for lead vocals and a group for backing vocals so I can process them differently. Part way through the song, the lead vocalist essentially becomes one of the backing vocalists. Is there a way in automation to change his target from Stereo Out to Group 2 at the appropriate time?

You should be able to automate “Direct Outputs” also in Cubase I believe. So you set up your second output to “Group 2” and you automate that to turn on and “Stereo Out” to off during the sections you want.

You could for example 1) set your loop to the section in question, 2) set “Fill” in the automation panel to “Loop”, 3) press play and once you are in the looped section you just click to turn “Stereo Out” off and “Group 2” off in the direct routing section. That should fill the looped section with that automation I think.

An alternative approach would be to duplicate the lead vocal track and delete all the Audio on that Track except the ‘background’ vocal section - and vica versa on the original (use Track Versions to keep a pristine copy). Then just route them how you like and don’t mess with any automation.

I like that solution, at least in this context. Thank you

I agree. Raino’s suggestion is probably generally better because this way you can also see what is happening and when on the timeline.

Method @MattiasNYC: Automated switch-over of track output routing

Method @raino: Distribution across 2 tracks with different destinations
