Automatic lyric extender lines with slurs

I must be missing something basic. Why aren’t the extender lines automatic with slurs here:

The bass I extended manually

Typing space will get you the extender lines.

I figured it was easy. Thanks!

Dear Fellow Folks of Lyrical Pursuits,
I am struggling with lyric extender line in Dorico 5. Fingers crossed that the function is updated so complex moves aren’t necessary.
Please see my comp: the word name has two notes and should have a lyric extender line, as should the word sun at the end.

Thanks for letting me know if there is a simple, straightforward action to take now. If not, I will handwrite in the extensions. Thank you!!!

My experience with lyrics is that Dorico will add a lyric extender line if there is room for it. In your example, both the words “name” and “sun.” have very little space after them. As an extreme example to demonstrate this, you might (temporarily) try putting a system break on the barlines which start bars 3 and 4 (which will leave bar 3 as the only bar on that system). You will probably find that “name” now has a lyric extender line because there is plenty of room for it without it being too close to the next word.

One action you could try is to move the following note (“lies”) in Engrave mode. Similarly with the second note of “sun”. Move it to the right a little.

I’d recommend reducing the minimum spsacing values for lyrics in Engraving Options>Lyrics, which should help create the space you need.

There is also a setting for the minimum space required to display extender lines. It could be that the rule says you need at least (for example) one space’s width, but you only have 5/8 of a space, so the line is not drawn. Decreasing the minimum value may cause them to render.
