When I type in a chord symbol with tensions in parenthesis (see below), Dorico automatically adds the word “add”. How do I remove this, ideally in the default settings? As a jazz musician and Berklee professor, we generally only use the word “add” if we are adding a tension to a triad. If a tension is added to any type of 7th chord, we just show the tension in parenthesis. I’m often frustrated with Dorico in part because it overrides the composer’s intentions.
Engraving Options > Chord Symbols has a whole bunch of options for customizing the display of chord symbols.
It’s useful to take time to explore all of the different settings available in Engraving Options, Notation Options, and Layout Options. Dorico gives you control over a huge number of rules that it will use to format your music. You may not like all the factory defaults, but no set of defaults will please everyone! You can make your own selections and save them as your personal defaults.
