Hello everyone
I’m a long-time Cubase user and VSTi enthusiast who recently discovered VST Live while searching for the right tool for an upcoming summer gig, first time without a band. I’m opening a new thread because I haven’t found anything similar on this topic.
I have a song structure with several repeated sections, for example A – A’ – B – C – A’’ – B – C – A’‘’, where the A-parts share the same chord progression.
What I’d like to do is record MIDI (or audio) in the first A-part and then automatically reuse/play that recording in the subsequent A-parts on the same track—without having to manually copy or move the recordings, so I can maintain a smooth performance flow.
Additionally, I’d prefer not to have to jump back to the same A-part repeatedly. Depending on the arrangement, I might want to trigger different VST instruments for each repetition while keeping the song structure linear—this is especially important for aligning with the lyrics.
My goal is to set everything up in advance rather than having to decide on the fly when to record or loop.
Unfortunately, there are hardly any tutorials on VST Live and the manual doesn’t clearly indicate for me whether this is possible. I suspect this might be achievable using some sort of loop function, though I’m not sure if VST Live can do this directly. I assume Ableton or Bitwig might handle this easily (not sure about MIDI though?), but I’d prefer to stay within the Steinberg ecosystem if possible.
Has anyone managed to implement something like this, or does anyone have any tips or workarounds for achieving this functionality in VST Live?
Thanks in advance for your help!
