Automation not recorded [RESOLVED]

Hello,

On an instrument track : Arturia Mini V4

I use my Arturia keylab to control the cutoff of the synth, when I use my knob on the arturia keyboard the cutoff moves well.

I tried several processes :

1 > choose the good CC (74) and put write/read mode for automation => nothing happens when I play the track and moves the knob to record this automation.

2 > remove all instant record parameters and put write/read mode for automation => nothing happens when I play the track and moves the knob to record this automation.

the cutoff moves on the synth but impossible to record the automation of this parameter …

HELP !

Thanks

To record automation, you need to have Record enabled on the Transport panel.

In case you have setup the plugin’s parameter directly to CC74 then you need to record midi, not VST automation.

no absolutely not, but i tried too and it doesn’t work

why this behavior … ? it’s weird Do we have use midi remote mandory to do that ?

Yes, Midi Remote translates incoming midi events into Cubase’s own format for driving the program. From there it can get transformed into VST automation.

For you it might seem weird. For me as 30 year veteran of Cubase it makes a lot of sense. I say this not to judge but to point out that there is a certain logic behind the behavior.

someone told me that it works directly he experimented

I created a ticket on Steinberg to know

Wouldn’t it be much better then to have that someone tell you (and us) how it is done?

Did you follow this?

Recording MIDI CC messages is the same as recording notes, they’re both MIDI events, no read/write automation is involved here. The automation is done inside the MIDI part’s data.

NOT for recording CCs. MIDI Remote is for assigning CCs to VST parameters, say MIDI CC 74 to handle the “Cutoff” parameter of a VST, it can be literally any parameter of the VST exposed to the DAW. These parameters are automated using the read/write automation process as mentioned earlier.

I think there may be some misinformation in the responses on this thread. Automation read and write works during both play and record. It’s like its own set of transport buttons

The way I usually approach your scenario is this- enable, read and write automation on the track, hit play, and adjust the parameter you want to set on your VST while it’s playing. Hit stop. You should have an automation track created for that change to the VST parameter Right click the track if you don’t see it, there’s an option to show automation tracks.

Once you’ve created the automation track, it’s really easy to set it to exactly the values you want, or even sweeps in values, it’s much easier to use an automation track than to try to send a midi event for one FX change.

If I’m not mistaken, OP is asking if they can use one Automation Track to control multiple instances of a plugin.

I think that is another topic.

You are using the mouse and not CC74. There is a huge difference between those two.

MIDI CC data can be recorded as either MIDI data or automation data. It simply depends on the recording method:

  1. MIDI data is recorded using the Record function, just like note events. It then appears as a conroller lane in the Key Editor.
  2. Automation data is recorded by activating the Write function. It appears in an automation lane of the track.

Both types can even be recorded together on one track (though not simultaneously*):

On the Mini V4, you also may have to map the Cutoff to CC74 - settings gear > MIDI > select CC74, click Learn, click on the Cutoff knob.

I checked on my Mini V4 and CC74 was not mapped to the Cutoff by default.

yes instead there is a macro ‘brightness’ but you do what you want after manage the parameter you’ll be able to record automation into the lanes
