Bar number changes at repeat endings

I’m trying to achieve the following bar numbering style, where bars in a first ending repeat are marked “a”, and those in the 2nd ending have “b” for the same numbers. (Gould, p. 237.)

If I create a Bar number change with a ‘subordinate’ a,

then I get 85a, 85b, 85c, 85d, … etc.

If I want 86a, 87a, 88a, … followed by 86b, 87b, 88b for the 2nd ending, it seems I have to create a bar number change for each one of these bars.

Is that right, or have I missed something?

This has been plaguing me for years … it’s so time consuming.

I think I’ve tried all options and combinations from that dialog, without success…
