Bar numbers disappeared

Using Bartok’s 4th st qt, mvt 2 to learn Dorico.
Using bar numbers (every 5) as rehearsal letters; following the Boosey & Hawkes score.
This score has frequent need for simultaneous 6/8 vs 2/4 rhythmic notation.
Sometime around bar 115–120 the numbers disappeared. The enclosures are still visible. (see the attached screen shot).
I changed the Rehearsal Marks in the Paragraph Styles lib: still no numbers.
Dorico newbie.
Any help?
Thanks, Bill

Hi Bill – Nice to see your progress with this. I am trying to guess from the picture what may have changed, but I don’t think I can. If you post the project, we’ll figure it out quickly.

Hi Mark;
Again, I’m really impressed
Bartok IV, II.dorico (1.7 MB)
by how responsive and useful this forum is.
I’ll attach the file.
This is not a mission critical matter for this score as I’m just using it to learn. However, there may be times when I’ll need to use bar numbers as in this score, so I’d like to know what, if anything, I did wrong to make the number disappear from the rehearsal marks.
Again, many thanks for the speedy reply.
I wait with baited breath.

This is strange. If you change the rehearsal marks to letters or numbers it works fine but if you change it to bar numbers they disappear. I see them disappear starting at bar 5.
I’m sure someone will be able to figure this out.

Another newbie question (me) : I don’t understand why we can see a time-signature (or division) sign posts to every measure even though the indication is the same

Very strange.

Yep: I changed them to letters, numbers and got the same result. They worked, but bar numbers didn’t.

I found it: The reason for the blank space in the Cello in bar 114 is there is a global 2/4 meter in 113, which makes that 4:6e tuplet extend into the next bar.

If you remove the local 2/4 in the Viola (currently the only one showing in 113), that restores the bar numbers and rehearsal marks.

You have to keep track of the global meter at every point, because that is what controls the numbering.

Any more questions, ask away!

(P.S. This file caused me to discover the Set All Signposts Shown/Hidden commands, which I never used before because long ago I set a keyboard shortcut for the Show/Hide Signposts toggle at the top of that menu.)

What a solution! I would have taken a month to see that (using D onlt since august).
I removed the local 2/4 in the viola and the numbers did indeed return. Unfortunately, Bartok (or maybe Boosey & Hawks, who knows) indicated “2/4” in the viola, so I reinserted the local 2/4. The numbers still appear!
(see the attached graphic. I raised the bar 115 rehearsal mark so you could see that it was there)
Again: I can’t thank you enough!

I lied. AFter I killed/replaced the 2/4 in the viola part, things were OK for a few bars, then the number rehearsal marks disappeared again.
I might have to give up on having the 2/4 in the viola part.

I’m sure there’s a way to solve this. You could stay in 6/8 globally and continue the hidden 2:3q (or 4:6e) tuplets in the Viola. I like to set up all the meters before putting in any notes, actually. Let me study this score and come back to you.

Also I forgot to mention: The gliss lines at bar 96 don’t have to be generic horizontal lines manually positioned. There’s a gliss technique.

I really, really appreciate the research. I’ve been working on Dorico most of the day, I’m burnt. I’ll get back to you tomorrow. Thanks again, Bill.

Any luck with the 2/4 rehearsal marks disruption?
BTW: the gliss info was very useful.
Thanks, Bill
