Bar numbers in extended open time signature measure

I only just noticed this.
The “real” measure number appears in the first system of this cadenza.
But then, the 2nd system (which is the continuation of a long non-measured bar) doesn’t show a bracketed measure number.
And then all the subsequent systems show the bracketed measure number (yes, they should all show [58].)

I’m not seeing any Signpost other than the SystemBreak at each new system.
Does anyone have an idea what I may have missed for that one system that’s not showing its measure number?

I did a colour screen grab if that helps to see the different Signposts.

I’m not sure what might be going on here. If you’re able to share the project file, we can take a look and see if we can figure out what might be going on.

will do.
it’s in the 2nd movement’s cadenza.

@dspreadbury

I don’t know if this will help with troubleshooting but here is one thing I noticed.

When I opened the project, the positions on the page were as shown in the first picture (after showing signposts).

When I selected the System Break signpost at the start of the second system and pressed alt-left arrow, the result was as shown in the second picture.

The issue is that the Hide bar number property is set for the open time signature at the start of bar 58, at the appropriate rhythmic offset for the start of the second system of the cadenza. If you delete the X time signature signpost and then recreate the open meter time signature at the start of bar 58, the bar number will appear at the start of the second system as expected.

how do I delete the open time signature without completely screwing up the spacing of what follows? is there a trick to it?

There shouldn’t be too much devastation wrought by deleting the time signature. The following music will be rebarred temporarily in 4/4 (if memory serves for what the prevailing time signature is), but once you re-add the open time signature, things should go back to how they were before, since all the system breaks etc. should remain in place.

awesome, thanks

done and fixed.
thank-you Daniel.
:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: now I owe you multiple beers!!

I’m curious: why is this? or how is this?

Can one actually set the property on a case by case basis to show or hide bar numbers?

or is this some sort of artifact that crept in somehow while I was working on this file? (Created originally in Dorico 3)

It can be set, yes, by selecting a bar number and activating the Hide bar number property. I suspect what happened is that the cadenza bar was once exactly the length at which the bar number appeared, and you were able to set the property at that point, but when the bar length changed, the property was not removed. It’s hard to say for sure exactly what happened, though.

thanks.
yes, chances are I fiddled (no pun intended) around with the exact placement of notes on which system etc… as I worked on this.

Since this was actually my very first large project in Dorico I probably attempted to visually alter things before really settling on D’s default spacing, or something like that.

Blame bad Finale habits for that.
