Bar widths in glissandos

Have glissandos over 4 bars…empty bars much too narrow - any way of widening? (without putting in hidden notes)

To answer your question:
If you want to widen your bars, instead of calling the Delete Rests command (or ending the voice of the first glissando note and starting it again on your last glissando note), set a transparent color on your bar rests in Engrave mode (and preferably set the local properties Globally while doing this so it’s reflected on all your layouts).

To give you a useful tip:
Consider notating your glissando like Gould recommends:

I use scale+color, just to be sure…

That looks good…
How would I go about putting the rests back that I removed?

Try selecting the first note of the gliss and using the Properties panel to unselect the end-voice property and likewise select the last gliss note and uncheck the start-voice property.

Thanks Derek, have got the rests back as you explained.

Now back to beginning - I can see colour palette in Engrave, have found the alpha channel and set to zero in the colour pallet (thanks Frigolito)

Alberto thanks for the scale answer, this renders the rests invisible!
