I’ve come across something that I can’t understand. It involves bars containing a hairpin that ends at the beginning of the first beat of the following bar, when there is no dynamic at the end of the hairpin (yes, I know how ‘wrong’ that is but you’re often not at liberty to make the decision to add these things when entering notes). When duplicating such a bar to other staves in the score, the barline interaction of the hairpin can change, seemingly at random, even though the dynamics are linked. The screenshot below is from an otherwise blank project that I created specifically for this example. I entered the notes and hairpin in the top staff and then copied the bars to the two staves below using alt+click. I did not do anything else whatsoever.
The hairpin in A.Sax 3 crosses the barline while the others don’t. The Barline Interaction option in properties is unchecked (greyed out) for all three hairpins. My general setting in Engraving options is that such hairpins are allowed to cross the barline. I have no problem with that in general, but what I don’t understand is that a hairpin that I entered in a specific way (ending before the barline) can randomly cross the barline when it’s copied to another staff. But then again it may not. It’s the unpredictablilty that makes this a bit annoying to deal with, since I now have to check this each and every time I copy something. I found out I can fix this locally by forcing a Barline Interaction setting (cumbersome, even with a macro and jump bar alias) or globally by changing the Engraving options (less work but maybe a bit drastic), but I thought I’d post this anyway because I can’t understand what could be causing this. Am I missing something? Thanks in advance!
This isn’t random: it’s because the bottom staff doesn’t have the barline extending past it to another staff below. Therefore, the hairpin doesn’t need also to meet the threshold for protruding beyond barlines.
If the property isn’t set, then these hairpins will follow your Engraving Options, which you’ve set to allow hairpins across barlines: all 3 are therefore allowed to, but only the bottom one can, and so it does.
If you look at the dashed attachment lines for each of these hairpins, you’ll see that their end position is the start of the next bar. An alternative way to prevent hairpins extending into the next bar is to shorten them rhythmically so they don’t officially end there.
A follow up question just to make sure I’m not missing something obvious again… Is it correct that the global setting for allowing hairpins to cross the barline can only be set for the entire project and not per layout?
So let’s say I’d want hairpins in the full score to not cross barlines because I want them all aligned, but I do want them to cross the line in the parts, I can only achieve that through making local changes in the Barline Interaction property?

At first I thought that this would mean setting a lot of individual local hairpin properties, especially since recording a macro from some reason doesn’t record selecting the “Locally” option. But then I remembered the Filter which means I can do this for the entire project in one go when I get to the engraving stage. Neat!
