Bars + Beats Linear? Huh?

My ruler is set to “Bars + Beats” and then under that “Bars + Beats Linear” is checked…

The manual just says:

Linear
Use this mode for material with a linear, time-related time base.

I have no idea what this means.

Is time now not linear? Was there some update to reality or something?

Really? Wouldn’t it be better to learn what it means?

Try to change your song tempo and you will see what it means.

Well, that is why I looked in the manual.

Here’s what the manual says (Cubase Pro 12):

Time Linear
Sets the ruler relative to the time. If there are tempo changes on the Tempo track, the distance between the bars varies in Bars+Beats mode.

Bars+Beats Linear
Sets the ruler relative to the meter position, that is, bars and beats. If there are tempo changes on the Tempo track, the distance between the bars remains the same in Bars+Beats mode. If the ruler is set to a time-based mode, the distance between seconds varies depending on the tempo changes.

In short, it is a visual representation thing.

Thanks! I didn’t see that in the manual, and I did look.

I always loved printed manuals - i would flip through them and learn all sorts of things.

Glad I could help.
I’m the same btw. And written manuals over YouTube videos any day of the week!
