I have a bass flute and when I;m in concert pitch, I’d like it to be in bass clef and notated at pitch. I have figured out the bass clef, using the clef/transposition overrides in setup, but I can’t get it to notate at the actual sounding pitch. (ie. middle C is one ledger line above the bass clef staff).
I’m curious as to why you would want it notated in Bass Clef at sounding pitch when it is traditionally notated in Treble Clef sounding an octave lower. Notating it in Bass Clef, even in a concert score, is uncommon.
Sorry, maybe I didn’t explain myself clearly, because I find it hard to believe this isn’t possible with a program as rich as Dorico.
I’m composing a low flute quartet - 2 alto flutes, bass and contrabass flute.
As I’m composing I am obviously in concert pitch. I would like to be able to see my bass flute and contrabass flute in bass clef, showing the actual sounding pitches. That way as I’m voicing a chord, I can see it just like I’m playing it on my keyboard. Obviously the final score will transposed with altos in ‘G’, and the bass and contra up one and two octaves respectively.
How can I do this? I figured out how to change the shown clef in Concert Pitch, but when I play a C below middle C for the bass flute, it shows as a middle C (which is the transposed pitch.)
@charles_piano showed you how to change the instrument definition so that written middle C in a concert pitch layout sounds as middle C instead of an octave lower.
Thanks, but I tried that and it didn’t do anything.
I’m wondering if there is a bug or something wrong with my Dorico. I make changes to that dialogue box, but then nothing happens, or the setting will change when I go back to the dialogue box.
Do you close the dialog by clicking OK? If OK is not enabled, then you need to click somewhere else in the dialog so that the change you made is recognized.
Here’s a simple project with the bass flute defined as bass clef and non-octave transposing in concert pitch layouts.
Just to make sure the explainations were clear enough, a short demo, with the Full Score in Concert Pitch on the left, and the Part Layout in transposed pitch on the right:
