Beam above/below rest

Evening, could you help me which setting should I change and how, to get rid of the beam below the rest? I tried unbeaming, beaming exclusively the last 4 semiquavers, also tried a lot the setting in Notation Option, no avail.:frowning:

Notation options has that setting, so I’d suggest to dig deeper
Sorry, I am answering with my phone, in bed — I can’t provide you with the accurate option you need to choose, but I am confident it’s there.

I am confident, too, I think once when started Dorico found this, but after I’ve sorted it out, forgot how did I do. Now I’m using a replacement laptop for a few days as my real one died and need to make all setting new, and feel even more stupid as earlier:) Thanks anyway for encouraging:)))

Is this an XML import by any chance? (As there are some more inconsistencies in the beaming). If your Notation options are the way you want them but the beaming doesn’t change, does select all and choosing Edit>Reset Appearance help?

It is imported, but the hint you gave doesn’t change it:(

To be honest I’ve resorted to reentering the music in certain bars from scratch when I encountered beaming and note grouping issues with imported XML files that persisted even when copying the music to a ‘fresh’ project. Not the quickest way to go but it’s most likely to get rid of any invisible issues.

I tried this, too. Usually it works well, not this time. I mean, I havent rewrote the whole, only this short section. I think there is some deep theoretical thought in the background, but can’t find it.

Select just the F# and make unbeamed.

Was interested how to unbeam.

Found it here:

  1. Select the notes you want to make unbeamed. You can do this in Write mode and Engrave mode.
  2. Choose Edit > Notations > Beaming > Make Unbeamed. You can also choose this option from the context menu.

It always works but now. There’s a cast on this bar!

Sorry, I don’t understand. What is a cast?

Possibly a spell? (In English, at least) a spell is usually cast on something or somebody.

This is what I meant, thank you:)

I think one English term might be a Hex (but perhaps even that is old fashioned)

Hi @kaposi.g,

something to try:

  1. select the eight rest > right click > Beaming > Split Beam
  2. did you try (with the correct Notation Options set) select that group of notes > right click > Beaming > Reset Beaming?
  3. maybe the XML had [2+2]/4 defined: select the time signature, and press Enter twice to reestablish the C (4/4),
  4. if nothing works, please upload your Project to see what is going on.

Thanks for all comments! I’ll save them for the future. The thing is that, it is an arrangement, and I made my own arrangement of the existing arrangement, and finally got to the decision to reduce music to crotchets so it is not important anymore, but it is definitely a weird case. I think it has to do with the .xml file I’ve been importing.

If you have this option in Dorico’s Preferences ON, then all beams will be “overrides” to whatever Dorico’s options have. You will need to Reset Beaming.

(I explain how this works in my video of importing XML for Finale users.)
