Beam across barline

Can someone explain beaming across barline in Dorico5? The explanations I have seen are not working for me.

It should be as simple as selecting the notes, (or just the first and last)
and right-click->Beaming->Beam Together. You can assign a shortcut
under Preferences->Key Commands. Not sure if there is one by default.

I’ve made this work before. But I can’t seem to select the first and last notes now. Please describe that for me.

Click on the first note, then cmd-click the last note, or on Windows, ctrl-click the last note. Shift-clicking the last note should work too. Then all the notes in between get selected.

The software is doing strange things. It’s a 7/8 bar on the bottom staff. The upper staff is also 7/8. On the bottom staff, when I try to enter notes, the software thinks it’s in 4/4 (or 8/8). When I enter, say, four notes, it adds four rests automatically. What do I do?

Maybe the notes are in different voices?
They have to be in the same voice.

Jesper

Not that I can ascertain. When I add 7 (4+3), the software adds an eighth rest.
Maybe I should reboot?

All of the notes are black.

Turn on View->Note and Rest colors->Voice colors.
But if it’s two staves the lower one is surely in another voice.
Maybe post the file or a picture of how it looks and what you want to do?

Jesper

Maybe you should use cross-staff beaming.

Jesper

Here I enter the notes in the upper staff

The selecting the last note and pressing M moves it to the lower staff.

If you enter the notes in the lower staff then press N to cross-staff to the upper staff.

I don’t want to use cross-staff. Here’s a picture of what I am trying to do. I wrote the piece in Finale but want to use Dorico to take care of beaming across the barline. It’s a 7 pattern on the top and a 4 pattern on the bottom. You can see the extra 8th note in the first bar. I realize I may need to replace the bottom notes entirely. I just want to know how to beam the notes across the barline. And how to select the first and last notes, which I recall doing several months ago when I tried it. I really appreciate your patience. I’m new to Dorico.

The red signposts shows that there is some hidden time signature. Try deleting them and and if needed enter Shift-M 7/8 again in the first bar.
Or pm me the file. I guess you imported it from Finale?

Just like in many other applications such as word processors, click on the first note and then shift-click (hold down the shift key and click) on the last note. Those two notes and all others in between should now be selected. Any action you perform will be carried out on whatever is selected. To beam the selected notes together, do Edit > Notations > Beaming > Beam Together (or right-click and choose Beaming > Beam Together). This will beam notes across barlines.

OK. I will try that tomorrow. It’s late. So I will sign off. Again, I really appreciate your help.

As I said in my first post @StevenJones01
The problem seem to be something else.

Jesper

To Steven, shift-click doesn’t work, but I will try Jesper’s suggestion about ctrl-click when I get the other problem fixed. Thanks to you for your help. I know a Steven Jones. Are you affiliated with BYU? Walt

I have never heard of BYU.
I am in Australia, if that makes a difference.

You should fix/delete the hidden time signatures first. The red signposts.
They are probably in 4/4 or 7/8 with an eighth note upbeat.
