8th-note tremolo half note triplets would make sense – and look good – were the passage as melodically simple as my illustration (above).
In reality, the passage is a stepwise, descending line with a lot of chromaticism, above which a slower-moving melodic motive (in another instrument) moves in non-tuplet time values.
