Beaming_Ties Quarter notes vs. Eighth notes

Hey everyone,

I have a question regarding beaming.

I’m looking for a notation setting that would allow quarter notes to be tied only across the imaginary barline (between beats 2 and 3), as shown in the image. However, I’d like the other rhythmic figure (the syncopated eighth notes) to remain split at the beat level.

Do you know what I mean? Is there a way to achieve this automatically without having to adjust it manually?

Thank you!

Best,
Nate

So if I understand correctly you want this?

I don’t believe it’s possibile to achieve this without having to use Force duration for one or the other (you’ll need the Split at beat boundaries setting for bar 2 but that will always break bar 1 as well). Unfortunately Dorico’s current Syncopation options for short-long-short patterns can’t be tweaked based on note values.

But perhaps others do know a way to achieve this with Notation options only.

This is exactly what I’m looking for….

One workaround could be to use a 4/8:4/8 time signature from bar 2 onwards, and hide that (that will give you an aggregate 4/8 + 4/8 TS without a dashed barline). But there are always side effects to toying with the time signatures, for example the two quarter rests in bar 2. There might also be consequences for beaming but that depends on your other settings.
