I’ve looked everywhere on the forum and can’t seem to find any reference to this issue.
Encountered this with my earlier works and I have reproduced the same behaviour with default piano solo template by dorico:
The stem direction becomes inconsistent only with beamed notes with this certain combination (including mirrored), and even though I can easily override this default behaviour, I’d still like to draw some attention to this behaviour and hopefully hear some reason why this is the case.
Could you attach an example project that shows the problem? I’m not getting the same results as you:
stem direction example.dorico (1.4 MB)
Untitled Project 1.dorico (1.3 MB)
Hi please see the attached example project. I can still replicate the result with default settings, but your sample worked out fine for me. I’m getting more confused…
Your example doesn’t show the same notes as your screenshot, and for me the results in your example are what I would expect.
The basic rules (our ref: STEAM-679) are:
-
If there are an equal number of notes either side of the middle line then the note furthest from centre of the stave dictates direction.
-
If there are an unequal number of notes either side of the middle line the majority of stems go in correct direction. However, if the notes with the losing direction are much further from middle then these win instead.
“Much further from the middle” is governed by this Engraving Option:

wierd. Maybe it’s an issue with my end. I’ll try restart my pc see if it helps
