Below a singers comfortable range?

Depending on if you’re a soprano, alto etc everyone has their own comfortable range. In the key which suits me very well Dorico says it’s too low and marks the notes in red. How can I tell Dorico to listen to me instead of having its own ideas?

I’m adding that I use the “Lead” instrument, but it should be adapted to any voice.

Either turn off the ranges, or change them in the Instrument editor.

You can untick notes out of range, or under Library->Instruments, set your own limits.

My fear is that if I make changes in the instrument editor I will be forced to sit and configure this for several hours, ending up with no sound due to the complexity of making custom settings in the playback.

I’ll start with that. Thanks!

I don’t think changing the range will affect playback. Just which notes are marked red.

I also feel like turning off Proofreading to get rid of the comments.

You can filter out proofreading warnings for Instrument Ranges, so you will never see them.

Thanks, Janus!

I’ll keep it in mind.

Changing the range in the Instrument definitions doesn’t affect playback – just what notes show up in red and trigger Proofreading.

Thanks, Ben!

However, the complexity of Dorico makes it hard to know for sure what affects things you do elsewhere. Better safe than sorry has become my motto.

I would suggest to experiment without fear (on a demo project): in my experience experimenting changing settings and seeing what the result is, is the best way of learning how Dorico works. Nothing is undoable
(And in this case experienced users said that in this case changing the range in the Instrument Definition doesn’t influence playback: so there is even less “risk” in trying it out)

I don’t see why folks who know what the range of a singer is grow so worried about red notes that they want to change the program parameters. I’d just live with the red notes; in fact sometimes I do.

Thanks, Christian!

I really appreciate your positive attitude where nothing seems impossible. It really encourages me to keep digging into those difficult tasks in Dorico.

It’s not worrying, just annoying that Dorico claims that the notes are out of range in this case. It’s not a regular instrument like a violin or cello for example and shouldn’t thereby be treated as such. I can live with and must accept the necessary measures to make my issue invisible.

You can tell Dorico to listen to you by editing the instrument definition, as others have said.

If you set thoses altered ranges to default by ticking the star bottom left, you won’t do have to do that again for new projects.

Click Save as Default image in the action bar.

Each user has it’s own preferences, so Dorico’s defaults can’t make everybody happy. Luckily there are standard ways of altering those defaults
