I am preparing a playback template for a Bigband with NI Kontakt. What is the best practice: Assign each instrument to one instance of Kontakt or all instruments in different slots of one or two Kontakt instances?
If you create a template that uses 16 different sample instruments in one Kontakt instance: then a new document with only 1 Trumpet will still load all 16 instruments. (Because that is the VST saved state.)
Alternatively, if you use fewer VST instances, then you’ll need more of them to build an ensemble.
If you are creating a template specifically for Big Band, with a set list of players, then fewer instances is probably better.
Thanks.
Yes, definitely fewer instances.
There’s not a heap of resources that are used by extra instances but there will always be some… at least that is what I’ve read and experienced too.
You should be able to get away with two instances if it’s literally just for a big band VST. And make sure you save the multis with all instruments purged.
