Best workflow for showing/hiding chords

I’m a convert from Finale, and I’m wondering what is the best workflow for setting up where chords appear in parts.

My desired result is that chord symbols only appear on specific parts, and only appear when that part is playing - either notes or slash regions. But I don’t want chords to appear over rests, or over bar repeat regions.

Is there a setting that does this automatically, or is the usual workflow to set my desired instruments to “Show only in Chord Regions and Slash Regions” and then manual add chord regions over notation sections? For example, in guitar and bass, even if there is notation, I want chord symbols, but using the setting “Show for rhythm section instruments” or “Show for all instruments” causes chords to appear everywhere, even on bars of rest, which for me, is not what I want.

Thanks for any input.

There’s no way at present to tell Dorico to show chord symbols only over bars with music in, though this has been requested before. Depending on the balance of bars with music in versus empty bars, it may be quicker to show all chord symbols and hide the ones you don’t want, or to hide all chord symbols and only show the ones you want via chord symbol regions.

@dspreadbury Thanks so much. This makes sense and I will adjust my work flow!
