Big interface problem with ghost notes and triggering of note entry while doing editing selections

Hi Dorico users,

I have a new problem with note entry and editing that may be created by some sort of mistaken preference I selected or by a recent change in the Dorico interface. I am finding that if I select a rest or a dynamic or often a group of notes for editing, the note entry grid immediately appears along with ghost notes etc. This seems happen whether I have pitch before rhythm or rhythm before pitch selected. The problem is such that I now have to go to the Escape key to get out of note entry as an extra action on almost every editing action that I take. I am even getting some pain in my left index finger because I have to do this so often and it’s quite frustrating to work this way. Is this due to a change in the interface or have I selected something deep in the bowels of the preferences panel that I am not aware of? I need a resolution to this problem as soon as possible as this is really undermining my work flow. PN

Hi @pnicholls,

if you select Start Note entry (duration before pitch, of course the caret appears, because that is what that button does): starts the note input:

If you deactivate Note Input (with ESC), the pitch before duration icon stays active (don’t know if this is the expected behaviour):
when using pitch before duration, to quickly avoid this wild appearing of the caret, activate the Arrow icon (called Select), to temporarily disable note input with the mouse. This will prevent the caret to unwanted appear, when pitch before duration is active (and Start note Input inactive). When you need to input notes with the mouse, click on Select again (to deactivate it). Or just deactivate pitch before duration with K.

You can also set the Select function (=deactivate note input with the mouse) activated per default, in the preferences, unchecking By default, enable note input using the mouse:

That said, I noticed too that having pitch before duration active (what I generally never use), and Select and Start Note Input deactivated, the caret will always appear in an undesired way, when (trying selecting something) just single click in a whole bar rest, or on a barline, or on a time signature, or near but just outside the staff, etc… (I think this is an unwanted behaviour).

Hi Christian, I appreciate your help here as that might have solved the problem. I seem to have had duration before pitch selected inadvertently without realizing it (being a dummy I guess). I agree that with Pitch Before Duration (which I do like sometimes) seems to set off the caret appearing and I wonder if this is some kind of bug or unintended consequence. As I said, my left forefinger is starting to hurt from all these unintended extra keystrokes. Perhaps Dorico developers need to look into this question. Thanks again for this help. I kind of new I might have been doing something wrong but maybe there is also a bit of a problem with the interface too. Cheers, Paul

No, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with Dorico here. If you don’t want mouse input to be available, activate the “select tool” (the pointer arrow at the top of the note input toolbox, as shown by Christian in the first of his pictures in his reply).
