Bit depth changes

I’m fairly new to Cubase and have just installed Cubase Elements 10 on my mac. Every time I open it, it changes the bit depth of my interface output to 8 bit. The input stays as 16 bit. No other DAW/editor on my system does this and it obviously makes Cubase unusable.

Every time it does it I need to go into the Audio MIDI setup utility and change it back to 16 bit.

Can anyone suggest why Cubase is doing this and how to solve the problem?
