Bizarre Blank Measures

In the middle of editing a score for two instruments (piano and violin), several violin measures suddenly went blank. No default rest, no pasting into those measures, no data of any kind. The measures cannot be selected.

Have others had this problem? I would be most grateful for any help or insights. I tried suggestions from Claude and ChatGPT, but none of them worked.

Select the last note (or rest) before it went blank and untick the Ends voice property in the lower panel. It could also be the Starts voice property on the first note after the blank section. Or both.

Thanks for your prompt reply, but I tried it and it didn’t work. The measures remain blank.

Could you share the file? You can pm me if you prefer. You don’t happen to have automatic cutaway under Layout Options->Staves and Systems->Cutaways?
Or if you could share an image of the place with signposts shown.

No automatic cutaway. The problem occurs in write mode. I managed to solve the problem for the moment by entering some new shares and reinputting the music. But it might very well arise again tomorrow, in which case I will revert.

I’m sure there’s a simple solution, but we can’t help you without a file.

You should be able to use the Note Entry caret in those bars, at least; and you can then type Shift B and enter “rest” in the popover.

Attached is an excerpt that shows the blank measure problem in bar 23 (piano right hand).

I tried benwiggy’s suggestion and it seemed to work, albeit only one measure at a time.

This problem has arisen more than once in this and other files, seemingly out of nowhere.. I would love to have a solution.

Hi @weigel, deactivate the end voice override on the green b in bar 2:

Then select the last couple of measures, and press V to change the voice to the red one:

And also in many other places where you have unnecessary different voices (colors) you can select and pressing V you can change the voice, so that many implicit and unnecessary rests will disappear.

It’s because the upstem voice1 note at the end of bar 2 has the ends voice property set and that voice is not used again until the very end!

(It’s generally a good idea to rationalise the use of voices)

Ok, it was the Ends voice, but in the second bar.
