Is it possible to have a border around a single word in a text item? For example, in the text “Solo over A and B”, to have a border around “A”, and another around “B”?
You could try MusGlyphs, which has bordered letters.

Welcome to the forum, @peter15!
Unfortunately, character styles in Dorico don’t include borders, so you can’t do it that way.
But if you download the incredibly helpful MusGlyphs font, you’ll see that you can make boxed letters with it. These letters match the Academico font from Dorico, so if you’re using a different text font, it might not look the way you want. But there are other fonts out there which can produced boxed text.

That’s perfect. Thank you both for the help!
There’s another font called Encercle that can do circles around characters, and other shapes as well.
