I’m having a difficult time setting up a bowed cymbal to playback in my score. I have read through forum topics, Facebook posts, and internet searches but I’m still struggling to get it to playback properly. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. I use Dorico 6.2.1 and Noteperformer 5.
If I recall correctly there was also an issue with using the built in arco/Bowed techniques since they fall back to natural due to the situation of using arco to return back to normal after a pizzicato passage with bowed strings. So you might have to create a custom playback technique called something like “Bowed (percussion)” and use this for the bowed cymbals instead of the built-in “Bowed” playback technique.
Yes, you can use a symbol that looks appropriate instead of text, if you want to. Native Instruments’ Symphony Series percussion (full version) includes bowed cymbals & tamtams.
Could you please expand on this. I’m interested in going this route
Looking back, it was actually a brushed cymbal, but that doesn’t change anything. I used the cymbal in this library and the vibraphone from this one. For playback purposes, the cymbal and vibraphone were each their own player. Each library was loaded in its own instance of VI Pro as VST Instruments in the Play screen. In the Track Inspector tab, the cymbal and vibraphone players were assigned to the appropriate VST. (Everything else was NotePerformer.) I made a custom percussion map for the cymbal. It only has 3 entries as I didn’t need much from it.
You go to Library menu/ Playing Techniques, look through the groups to see if there is something there already, and if not, create a new one from scratch. There is an entry in the manual, Creating custom playing techniques.
