Yep, I’m getting the same thing.
Sounds like you should delete the Dorico userlibrary.xml file.
Could it be they are stored in your user library->Application Support->Steinberg->Dorico 6->DefaultLibraryAdditions. Don’t know where on Windows.
Jesper
Or that, but will delete other stuff also.
Jesper
You can edit the user library file to remove chord alterations.
@markcapon If you’d like to upload your file here, I can take a look at it.
Dan, Jesper, Aaron,
I want to thank you gentlemen for trying to help me but as you can see this is highly complicated. I opened a support ticket with Steinberg almost 4 weeks ago and they are waiting for a response from DORICO. Meanwhile DORICO does not respond or they take a prohibitive amount of time in responding when I write to them and I post on this forum and on the Facebook group. This is very poor customer support and that is putting it mildly.
Griping aside I just opened my project again and those chord symbols are still there. I attached a screenshot. I think there is something environmentally wrong on my end and I think it is because in these user files or whatever they are called has these chord symbols that cannot be deleted because I have used them in ALL my projects. What do I have to do? Delete every single trace of DORICO from my computer including my projects and reinstall DORICO? This is obviously unacceptable. It seems all these user files are stored in a STEINBERG folder on my hard drive but I am afraid of going in there and deleting things I know nothing about. Aaron, I uploaded my project file in my last response. Just scroll up and you will find it. I really feel that DORICO support should be looking at this and they just won’t respond.
If anyone from DORICO support sees this post I would appreciate it greatly if you would take a look at it. This issue has been going on for quite a few weeks at this point and I do not know if anyone is addressing it. I will provide any documentation that is required and will work with you to solve this issue. All I want to do is to delete ALL my custom chord symbols from EVERY project that I have because I have discovered they are not needed. The DORICO defaults will suffice.
Hi Mark. I understand how frustrating this situation is for you, because you opened a ticket four weeks ago… Actually, here is where this kind of problem gets solved (all Dorico problems, actually). As Benwiggy told you, the Team reads everything and users, powerusers and members from the Team do answer. Benwiggy, for instance, is not a Team member but is the creator of the excellent Nepomuk and Splentino fonts that are bundled within Dorico 6 (so I guess he does know stuff about fonts).
If you read carefully the Version History from Dorico 6, Daniel Spreadbury has explained quite extensively the change that happens with those fake fonts, the way Windows is quite strangely specific when it comes to fonts, and how unreliable this ends being, if not addressed. So they addressed the problem. If you want a bolder music text font, those do exist and are perfectly reliable (avoid the Finale ones, though… my 2c) Every font from Norfont (he does read and write here too) or MTF is high quality stuff. I also love Sebastian font (finished by Benwiggy, by the way) but its weight is not higher than Academico so it won’t fill your needs.
You’ve already received great advice, and reading your last post, I’d say removing your userlibrary.xml file from the Users\yournamehere\AppData\Roaming\Steinberg\Dorico 6 folder should solve your problem, and I hope someone from the Team will chime in if it’s not the case.
Hello Marc, Thanks for your input. At this point I have already changed my Chord Symbols Font to REGULAR and my Chord Symbols Music Text Font to REGULAR. Even though I prefer bold this is certainly sufficient as the chords symbols are quite readable. Ever since I first used DORICO I have used Academico for the Chord Symbols Font and Bravura for the Chord Symbols Music Text Font since they were the defaults and I like the way they look. In addition it is my understanding that these two fonts have had their kerning values for chord symbols set by the DORICO developers while other font combinations have not so I want to go with what the DORICO developers have provided. I am not qualified to start messing around with kerning. The end result is my chord symbols now look good so they will certainly suffice. The only problem is that my custom chord symbols are messing up the chord symbols and to prevent that I need to go through a very complicated work around for every project which entails unchecking the save as default star and resetting it but it is not really deleting it. I then have to go into Library Manager and revert to factory settings to finish the task of preventing the custom chord symbols from messing up the chords in my project. I made these custom chord symbols which now I find are completely unnecessary because at the beginning I came to DORICO from Finale and I did not understand about chord preset options and the chord preset options are certainly good enough for me. But now I have to do this complicated work around for every project and I also lose my engraving so I have to do that all over again. I am thinking there has to be a better way. I included a screen shot. Is that the file that should be deleted? Maybe I can just rename it first. What exactly is in this file? All my custom chord symbols and engraving options?
I did not know about this document where Daniel is explaining about the fake fonts in windows. I watched many videos about DORICO including migration videos. Where is this document?
So please let me know if the file you mentioned that I provided the screenshot with below is the one to delete. There is also a DORICO 5 version of the file. Thanks!
Please upload the file c:\users\<username>\AppData\Roaming\Steinberg\Dorico 6\userlibrary.xml, and I will remove your chord symbol customizations.
The best way to get there is to type %appdata% into the File Explorer address bar, which will take you to c:\users\<username>\AppData\Roaming. Then you can navigate the rest of the way.
Do not touch the file you found under Program Files\Steinberg.
Aaron, typed in %appdata%
This is what I got. I assume I should go into the Steinberg folder?
Now I have this. Please note I have BOTH DORICO 5 and 6 on my computer.
what folder contains the custom chord symbols?
I noticed that BOTH the DORICO 5 AND DORICO 6 folders contain userlibrary.xml files
Should I delete (or safer rename?) both user library xml files? what is in these files? my custom chord symbols that I want to delete? Any other stuff that will get deleted along with it like my engraving choices? For instance the size of lyrics, my page templates, etc?
I believe you’re now using Dorico 6, so please upload the userlibrary.xml file from the Dorico 6 folder.
No, as was said above, these files contain lots of things that you probably don’t want to lose. If you upload the file, I should be able to remove just the chord definitions. Then you can make a backup of your original file and drop the new file in its place, and you should be good to go.
userlibrary.xml (1.5 MB) Aaron - here is the user library. However I do not understand what you are trying to do. Is there a utility or command in DORICO to remove components from this file? All I have seen is the Library Manager where you pick a component and compare it against factory settings and import the factory settings in it’s place. Is this something you can guide me through so I know how to do it on my end? This instructional video does that but restores EVERYTHING to factory including my engraving options so I have to redo all that stuff manually.
And the chord symbols, even though they are corrected and look good they are STILL in my chord symbols menu. Is that because this is a project specific command and I need to do this to ALL my projects before those chord symbols go away?
This file is just XML – plain text in a certain format. It contains a variety of user preferences, which get applied to all new Dorico projects. I confirmed on my end that when I started with your preferences file, I could see a bunch of chord symbol alterations in a new project. Then I edited the preferences file and removed things that were related to chord symbols, and when I restarted Dorico and created a new file, the chord symbol alterations were no longer there.
You should close Dorico (if it’s open), make a backup copy of your file, and then save this file in its place. Start Dorico and open a new project, and make sure it looks as you expect.
I’m not sure what the best way is to deal with existing projects.
userlibrary.xml (6.9 KB)
UPDATE:
I went through my custom chord symbols and unchecked the illuminated star and then reset it and then I compared everything to factory settings and i imported factory settings for chord symbols but also non chord settings that could affect chord symbols like fonts for music items BUT I left my page template intact! End result is that my page template is intact and my options like NOT displaying the clef and key signature on staves following the first stave are preserved. Then to make the chords look balanced i picked REGULAR for the chord symbols font AND the chord symbols music text since BOLD is not supported anymore for the chord symbols music text font on DORICO 6 and then i picked the same size for both of them and then I picked the chord symbols preset options I like and everything looks good! I plan to do this for the remainder of my DORICO projects. I DO HOPE when I do the last project is done the custom chord symbols will disappear since they are not being referenced anywhere in my projects. I guess I will have to address that when I finish my last DORICO project. I have about 75 projects so maybe I can do a five a day. At least I think I have the methodology down.
If anyone knows if my custom chord symbols will eventually disappear when I finish the last project please let me know. I still consider this issue open but at least now I think I have it somewhat under control. I will post updates when needed till hopefully this issue is completely resolved.
I would like to thank everyone who helped me with this.
Hi. I’m glad you finally received the help you needed (this place is really a special one). You should be able to download the version history through the Steinberg Download Assistant >My applications>Dorico 6 (right below the application) or on Dorico 6 Downloads | Steinberg
DELETING CUSTOM CHORD SYMBOLS IF ALL ELSE FAILS
--------------------------------------------------------------
When I came to DORICO from FINALE I was obviously inexperienced and I did not yet understand about chord preset options and changing the font sizes through the Library/Font Styles pulldown menu. I was creating custom chord symbols for common chords used in popular jazz standards. To sum it up briefly, somehow I believe I managed to overwrite DORICO’s provided chord symbols. The end result is my chord symbols were a mess and I was editing, dragging, etc. With the help of a great video by David Larsen https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzCjNHXiDgs and the instructions I got from one of the Steinberg associates here is a summary of the resolution:
2)Reinstall DORICO PRO 6
3)Go into CHORD SYMBOLS in ALL your projects and reset to default all your chord symbols and click OK they should disappear from the list permanently.
Go into LIBRARY MANAGER and click FACTORY SETTINGS in the upper right hand corner. Scroll down the list on the right and if you have any Chord Symbol components with an equal sign with a slash colored RED then click the equal sign with the slash so it turns GREEN to reset it to the DORICO FACTORY SETTINGS defaults.
Scroll through the list of COLLECTIONS on the left and what worked for me is resetting the following if they have an equal sign with a slash through it and it is colored RED:
CHARACTER STYLES, FONT STYLES, GLYPH PRIMITIVES, and MUSIC SYMBOLS as I believe these components are used by chord symbols. Then click APPLY and CLOSE.
Additional: I like to go to LIBRARY/FONT STYLES and change the CHORD SYMBOLS FONT and the CHORD SYMBOLS MUSIC TEXT FONT to the size I want. I use the fonts which I believe are the
defaults which are ACADEMICO for the CHORD SYMBOLS FONT and BRAVURA TEXT for the CHORD SYMBOLS MUSIC TEXT FONT and i set them both to the REGULAR style since
REGULAR is the only option for the CHORD SYMBOLS MUSIC TEXT FONT when it is using BRAVURA TEXT.
Then I go to LIBRARY/ENGRAVING OPTIONS/CHORD SYMBOLS and I select the specific chord symbol appearances I like and that will be saved as a CUSTOM pre set. Click APPLY and CLOSE and you are done!
If you made the same mistake as me hopefully my experience will save you some time.
Thanks to everyone on the forum for their help!
I consider this problem to be FULLY RESOLVED!
QUESTIONS:
Is there a centralized place where DORICO users can list future enhancements they would like to see?
I would like to see some protection built into DORICO to prevent a user from accidentally overwriting DORICO default components.
Right here!
I’m not sure exactly what you’re asking. It is a feature of Dorico that you can set your own user defaults which take precedence over Dorico’s factory settings; I don’t think you can do this “accidentally”, because you have to click one of the “Save as Default” buttons. And the factory settings themselves are stored in a different place, and you’d have to make a real effort to edit those files by hand in order to alter them.

Different guy, I think, Ben…
I believe YourMuusic.Pro is correct. It is a different user with a similar problem.
