Break Multimeasure Rests

Good day all!

I’ve searched the forum to, as yet, no avail. I’ve written a big band chart and want to maintain 4 measures per stave spacing but in my trombone parts I have 2 measures, one of rest and one containing rests and notes, followed by 3 measures of multimeasure rest. The last of that multimeasure rest should be a visible measure of rest followed by a measure of music. I’m attaching screenshots of that page of the score and one of the trombone parts.

Thanks in advance!

Are you talking about mm.113-117? To me, the score looks just like the part: a bar rest in 113, a note in 114, and then 3 bars rest.

Edit: Oh, are you expecting Dorico to break the multi bar rest, so that there’s a 2-bar rest on that system, pushing one bar of rest onto the next system? I don’t think it works that way.

I don’t expect Dorico to do it natively; I want to force the break to maintain a 4 measure per system setting. Before this point in the chart, there are an 11 and 12 measure rest that use an entire staff. While I had to force a single measure up to the 11 measure rest, it makes sense that those items utilize an entire staff system. Ar the same time, I’m very much an old school engraver (I hand engraved music before Finale and the rest) and prefer a 4 measure per system “look and feel”. Plus, it keeps all of my rehearsal marks on the left side of the page.

You can force a multi bar rest to break by using the Split Multi-bar Rest functionality, or by putting in an explicit barline. Both of these will affect all layouts, which I guess is what you want. (Note that you can only perform Split Multi-bar Rest in Engrave mode, but once you have one, you can copy and paste or Alt/Opt+click the signpost in Write mode to put it in other places.)

If you want to split a multi bar rest in only one layout, you need to add something else to that layout, like staff text containing only a space.

(As an aside, you might want to edit your post to remove your phone number from this public forum.)

Edited my phone number out. I responded directly from my email rather than in the forum.

Adding staff text to that layout did the trick. I definitely don’t want to affect all layouts; just those that need to look “old school”.

It seems to me there needs to be a better way.

I think this is just another example of required notations being different in Scores from Parts. The oft requested one being bar repeats in Parts, but not in Score.

I’ve run into numerous instances of repeats in parts but not in scores and, occasionally, the opposite. My preference is for scores and parts to look alike so there’s zero confusion in rehearsals and on the occasional gig where a band is reading something new but “nothing lines up”; sometimes in multiple parts and sometimes including the score.
