I think this topic has been covered, but I didn’t find a resolution in the post trail from a similar issue in 2025.
I’m having a little argument with Dorico Pro 5. I want to put both a fermata and a breath mark in the clarinet part, just like I did in the flute and other instruments. But it is making me choose. If I put it a fermata, I can’t put a breath mark in. And vice-versa. Uploading screenshots to help illustrate.
It must be something I’m doing, because it works in other voices…?
You can’t have them on the same note, but you can have the fermata on the note and add the breath mark at a later rhythmic position in the same bar.
(And yes, I happen to have struggled with the same thing just 2 days ago…)
As @Estigy said, a fermata and a breath mark can not be on the same note (actually on the same rhythmic position), but fortunately the Holds and Pauses popover is available in Note Input mode.
So press SHIFTN then SHIFTH ferRETURN to insert the fermata, then move the caret one position to the right and insert the breath mark. If the default quaver/8th note grid is to broad, set the rhythmic grid to 16th or even smaller
