Hi Steinberg Team,
There’s a workflow feature that used to exist in older Cubase versions (up to v13 or v12) that many of us really miss — and I hope it can be brought back or reconsidered.
In earlier versions, when using the Range Tool inside automation lanes, the Range > Duplicate command behaved contextually:
-
If the selection was inside automation lanes, Cubase duplicated only the automation data (volume, pan, etc.) across multiple tracks,
-
without copying the underlying audio or MIDI events.
This made it extremely easy to copy automation sections (for example, chorus/refrain levels) across multiple tracks without affecting the content below.
In Cubase 14, the same command now duplicates everything inside the range — audio, MIDI, and automation — making it impossible to duplicate only automation shapes.
Steps (Old Behavior):
-
Select the Range Tool.
-
Drag over the automation area (across multiple tracks).
-
Use Edit → Range → Duplicate (or shortcut).
Only automation data was duplicated.
Current Behavior (Cubase 14):
The same action now duplicates all events and automation, even if the range was only on automation lanes.
Why it matters:
This “context-aware” duplicate was an elegant way to handle automation-only edits — especially in large mixes with linked tracks or grouped volume moves. It saved time and prevented unintentional duplication of events.
Please consider restoring this as a separate option or preference, such as:
“Duplicate Automation Only (Respect Selection Context)”
This would bring back a very practical and efficient workflow for mixing automation.
Thank you for considering this!
