One feature I find absolutely outstanding in VST Live is the Layer window, which allows very refined, real-time control over MIDI performance.
It would be extremely valuable to bring a similar concept into Cubase.
Proposed concept:
Integrate a per-track MIDI “Layer-style” processing module that would:
-
Act as a real-time MIDI filter/modifier (velocity ranges, splits, transposition, etc.)
-
Be applied directly at the track level
-
Allow recording of the processed output onto the MIDI track
Why this matters:
This would significantly improve workflow for:
-
Expressive MIDI performance
-
Live recording with nuanced control
-
Sound design directly at the MIDI input stage
Additional suggestion:
This functionality could also be integrated into Track Presets, allowing users to recall complex MIDI behavior instantly.
Why it’s a good fit:
Cubase already excels in MIDI editing — but this would bring it closer to a performance-oriented workflow, similar to what VST Live achieves so well.
As someone working extensively with expressive MIDI performance, this would be a major workflow improvement.
