Brushes and Sticks in one Instrument using Grove Agent SE

Dear Dorico friends,

I would like to write a drum set part where the drummer switches between sticks and brushes. I found a very nice YouTube tutorial showing how to do this with NotePerformer.

However, I also have separate speaker parts in the score. These are written as one-line percussion instruments. The problem is that when I mute the speaker parts, the drum set gets muted as well.

My question: is it possible to create such a drum set setup using Groove Agent SE instead of NotePerformer, so that the drum set playback remains independent from the speaker parts?

Thank you!

Are the speaker parts instruments of the same player (drummer)? Or are the seperate.

How do you mute the speaker parts?

I would think muting a player in Play mode won’t affect other players

No, of course not. There are five separate players: four speaking voices written as single-line percussion instruments, because they speak rather than sing, plus the drum set as a separate player. That’s why I’m wondering why NotePerformer mutes all percussion voices and the drum set together.

Are they in separate channels?

Yes, 1, 2, 3, 4 and drumset on 7. The same port 1

Do I understand correctly the drumset gets muted when you mute the voices only?

Pretty interesting situation. If I mute Group 1, Voice 2, and Group 2, the drum set still plays back along with the other instruments. But if I additionally mute Voice 1, there is no sound at all.

Yes, but actually I see just when I mute Voice 1 - there is no playback at all. Otherwise everything functioning as it have to be..

I guess it would be helpful if you could provide a small sample projectfile with just a bar or to to see what might be the cause.

I think that’s quicker than guessing from screenshots

OK, here ist just short example:

I would love to solve this with NotePerformer, and thank you in advance for your help.

In any case, the second part of my question still remains unanswered: is it possible to create such a drum set setup with brushes and sticks and have it play back properly without third-party samples, using Groove Agent SE instead?

I don’t have Noteperformer, so can’t help you here.

To have sounds on yout sample, I had to Apply the Playback template Auto to hear anything.

And I had no problem with muting Voice 1 and still hear the drumset.

Maybe you could re-apply the noteperformer template and see if that helps.

II did, but it doesn’t help. Let me try to explain it again.

I’m trying to use NotePerformer because I found a YouTube this tutorial (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ba1doRWbDoU) showing how to set up a drum set with brushes and sticks at the same time. However, in my case, I can’t use it because of an unknown muting bug.

Groove Agent SE works perfectly for me otherwise. So my question is: is there a way to create a drum set in Dorico using the built-in Groove Agent SE sounds and switch between brushes and sticks within the same instrument?

I can’t help you further, sorry, others with more experience (and with Noteperformer) undoubtedly chime in.

But

Unexplained behaviour most of the time isn’t caused by bugs.

At least I couldn’t find a reason, because the same project with Grove Agent SE works fine..On my side as well:blush:

I may be mistaken; I’m not at my computer to check.
If you click the “e” for Noteperformer to bring up the user interface, is there an icon for a mixer? I seem to remember a thread that mentioned Noteperformer’s playback being “bundled” and then passed to Dorico. Perhaps you need to mute it there.

Thank you for your ideas. I just went another way — I set up all my spoken voices as triangle parts, and now everything works as expected. The tom-toms that were previously set up for the spoken voices were probably somehow conflicting with the drum set tom-toms.

NotePerformer uses its own mixer, not the Dorico one.

Sounds like that might be the problem!:exploding_head:
