Not sure how this happened. But I now have an unassociated Xylophone staff. How do I get rid of it?
Isn’t it an instrument belonging to the Drumset player? You can click the arrow on the left of the Drumset label to check.
That’s it. So now the mystery is how the Xylophone ended up there. When I opened the file it was just a drum set.

Probably when you opened the file you were in Page view (and instrument change functionality shoes only the upper/first instrument in the player). If you switch to Galley view you will see all the instrument hold by the players, which possibly is happening in your screenshot (see also flute and piccolo, both visible)
