Bug? Tracks with direct monitoring enabled are not bounced

Hi guys,

I run Cubase 14 on Windows 11 and have Tape Machine style monitoring enabled in the preferences. Whenever I export a project, the track with Direct Monitoring enabled is not bounced.

  1. Open export window

  2. Select Range or Cycle Marker

  3. Export audio mixdown

  4. Mixdown is without the track with Direct Monitoring enabled.

Is this a bug or by design?

Hi,

Do you mean the tracks which have the Monitor button enabled?

This is by design. If the Monitor is enabled, the track doesn’t play back what is in the track; it just connects the track’s input to its output.

Hi Martin,

I understand this from a recording perspective, but when exporting the project, this doesn’t make sense I think.

Best,
Rob

Hi,

You can export in real time and perform any of the tracks in real time (I don’t do this, but I have seen it).

Yeah I get it, but my point is still valid I think; when exporting, the track with Direct Monitoring enabled should be included.
I can’t find in the manual that this is by design tbh…

Martin appears to think you are referring to the Monitor Enable button on the Track. But I think you mean the actual Direct Monitor section in the MixConsole that allows you to route the Audio to one or multiple destinations.

Direct Routing does seem to have a bug when using Render In Place, and I suspect with Bounce - although I don’t generally use Bounce & can’t comment from experience.

When Rendering you will end up with a blank file if the Direct Routing is not set to the first slot. Doesn’t matter what is in that slot, just that it is Selected. In the screenshot below the Channel on the left will not render correctly, but the one on the right will. I agree this is a bug.

Cubase has different methods of handling the monitoring. Choose the right one for your intended behavior.
If the monitor button is engaged, the input is routed through, because that is what the monitor button is intended to do. If you need to have the track part of your mix down, disable monitoring.

But he is referring to the export.

Right you are. I got fooled by the use of “bounced” in the title.

Interesting thought.

@Redford , if the sound goes to monitors by direct monitoring is included in exports, what ‘timing’ should they included? And through which path?

Direct monitor sources, depending on hardwares are folded back to monitor path without going into daw. If this is included in exported file, the daw has to capture the audio at one point. Audio events on audio tracks goes through inserts on the channel, groups then master, But direct monitored sources do not. So when exporting, what should happen? The direct sound should be included as is, that means the sound is just added parallel to the master track? Or it suddenly change its original path and mixed with other sound in the master bus?
