C-12 – Can't Figure Out Hardware Synth In to Play and Record MIDI Track

Cubase 12 Pro
Windows 10
Audio I/O – Behringer U-PHORIA UMC204HD

This is stuff I did with my eyes closed for years – now I feel like an idiot newbie that can’t pull off this basic setup.

When I hit the keys on the Korg Trinity the only sound and meter activity seen is on the single stereo IN channel in the MixConsole.

I want to use one of the Korg Trinity’s bass program banks to play the MIDI melody and record it on an Audio track.

When I hit play over the melody there is some low activity playing it on the MIDI track. But nothing is coming through any Audio track or bus for this melody sequence.

Here is what I’ve got:

Instrument (Korg Trinity) is listed and connected in External Instruments:

MIDI Track IN – All MIDI Inputs
MIDI Track OUT – Trinity (UMC204HD 192k Midi Out) – Channel: Any

Audio Track IN – IN (using only 1 stereo in - L/1 R/2)
Audio Track OUT – Main Bus or No Bus

To make sure, I uninstalled/reinstalled the Behringer drivers, no change.

As stated, I feel stupid having post this Q, but I need to solve it – and then make a PostIt of it and staple it to my freakin’ head…

BTW, same thing is now happening with VSTi Instrument tracks: say I want to re-record a bar using the Korg as MIDI keyboard (my usual thing), it’s not triggering the VSTi. So no play, no record there either with monitor and record activated.

What am I doing wrong??

Despite its name ‘ALL MIDI Inputs’ may or may not include ALL of them. You define what is & isn’t included in your MIDI setup. Sorry not at Cubase for exact, but it’s under Studio. So the Track’s input might not be receiving the MIDI from the Korg. You can use the MIDI Monitor MIDI Insert to see what if anything a Track is receiving.

If you’re just sorting things out I’d dump the External Instrument until you sort out the basics (or like me never). It’s mostly useful if you want your external hardware to look like a VSTi within Cubase. Personally I treat a hardware keyboard just like any other Audio source like a voice, guitar, etc. If your Korg’s Audio is routed to an Audio Track with Monitoring Enabled and you play the keys on the Korg do you get Audio on the Track?

EDIT
One more thing and I’m not exactly sure when this changed, but it was fairly recent. It used to be that if a MIDI Controller wasn’t turned on when Cubase is launched it wouldn’t be detected if powered up later until you reset the MIDI connections in Cubase. I think C12 was before that got fixed.

I didn’t know that had been “fixed”, thanks!

I had no sound, but just found out that there was a conflict:

In Audio Connections I can’t have the Korg as an External Instrument connected at the same time as the IN connected to the same 1/L and 1/R of my I/O. That’s how I had it so now that only the IN is connected, the audio is heard on my Audio track when I play the Korg.

But I still need to have the MIDI track play/trigger the Korg to come through the Audio track.

As stated, I’ve done this many times before - I’ve been using Cubase since SX1 and over many years really only basically used VSTi for drum tracks - I played and recorded solely from the Korg’s Combination and Programs banks as audio source.

MIDI track (“TRI IN”) is as mentioned:
IN - All Midi Inputs - OUT - the Trinity
Still nada happening.

MIDI Monitor shows activity, but still not routed to Audio track (“TRI AU”).

I’ve gotten that to work. One thing that was important was NOT to use ALL MIDI inputs. When I create a new device (as mine isn’t in the pre-populated list), I have to select the MIDI channel that my external hardware is using, instead of accepting the default of ALL MIDI inputs.

Well, I figured it out - dumb mistake.

My Korg’s MIDI outputs are In, Out, Thru. To work with Cubase it has to be IN and Out, not Thru. I somehow had one of the MIDI cables plugged into Thru. Must have happened when I was checking something with the Korg a week ago or so.

So sorry to waste people’s time here…

Just to be clear, you can configure All MIDI Inputs to include/exclude any of your available MIDI Ports.
