C11 to C13 Scrolling Issue

This is another irritating issue I have discovered with C13 (coming from C11). In C11, say I’m in the Project Window. I want to scroll forward using my mouse wheel and the shift key, so I do that. I then move the mouse cursor down to the Transport bar, click on Play, listen to a few bars, hit Stop, and then scroll ahead a few more bars. No problem.

What I have found in C13 is that when I want to scroll forward, I actually have to click the mouse cursor INSIDE the window before I can begin my scroll. OK, fine, the window needs to be selected. But then I move down to the Transport bar, hit Play, listen, then stop and attempt to scroll forward. Nothing happens- until I click INSIDE the Arranger window again. Then, once again, I can scroll forward. In C11, I didn’t have to click AGAIN inside the window- the scrolling operation just carried on from before I clicked on the Transport bar.

The real problem with this is when I’m in an Editor window. If I want to scroll forward, I have to make my second (redundant) click INSIDE the window- which can end up unintentionally inserting a new note, which I then have to erase. This is a huge interruption to the flow.

Is this a known or intentional change from C11? Or am I missing a preference or something? Thanks.

Hi,

Do you use the Transport Bar in the Project window (this one keeps the focus in the Project window) or do you use the Transport Panel (this moves the focus to the Transport Panel window)?

Are you on Mac or Windows?

Martin-

I’m on Win10.

I have always primarily used the F2 floating panel, and it has always kept the focus on the Project window (in my experience). Is this something that changed after C11?

Hi,

I’m not aware of any intended change.

I can’t reproduce this on my side on macOS and Windows 11 (with the Transport Panel).

Are you saying that you can’t reproduce my ability to scroll in C11 even when the window is not in focus?

I made a video of the issue but I can’t get it small enough (4MB limit) to post here? Is there some other way to get a video to you?

Hi,

Sorry, the other way around. It works for me in Cubase 13 the same way as you describe it works only in Cubase 11 for you. So no problem in Cubase 13 on my side.

Isn’t there a workaround using AutoHotkey or something? I use AHK for a lot of these little annoyances.

The mouse wheel will perform according to what the mouse cursor is hovering - at least on my system. Ie. if the mouse cursor is hovering over the transport panel it will perform on the transport panel. If it s hovered over the project window it will work on the project window.
No clicking necessary.
I also would not be aware of any settings that can change this.

OK, I made 2 short videos to demonstrate my issue; I will make 2 separate posts. The first one will be the normal scrolling operation in C11; the second is C13.

In the C11 clip, I can select the upper window and scroll, or I can select the lower window and scroll, and I can click Play/Stop on the Transport Panel and continue to scroll without any clicking or interruption. As it should be.

In the C13 clip, I can select the upper window and scroll normally, but then I discovered something else- when I select the lower window, my Inspector window goes blank, something that does not happen in C11, I have to re-click on my track in order to re-open the inspector. This should not happen, and does not happen in C11 (I checked).

To continue- I then show that I can still scroll normally without re-selecting the upper window- until I again Play/Stop- and then I can no longer scroll normally, until I click on the upper window.

I sense that there is a correlation between the scrolling and disappearing Inspector window issues. I’m considering a re-installation, unless anyone can explain this behavior. Thanks.

Hi,

In the Cubase 11 video, I didn’t see the Control Panel involved. So you are comparing something different.

In the 2nd video… There is no Inspector for the MixConsole. This is correct.

If “control panel” is Czech for Transport Panel - that is clearly visible in both videos.

Yes, a correctly found misbehaviour. A click in the empty area of the lower zone mix console should not clear the track and channel selection.

Hi,

Obviously I wrote something different, than I wanted to. Of course, I mean the Transport Panel.

And yes, you are sure, it’s visible on both videos.

So we’ve identified some discrepancies in Cubase 13’s behavior. I’m assuming this isn’t a global bug. Does this look like something that can be fixed by a re-install, or will this require tech support?

Well, I still work on Cubase 12. The behaviour there is the same as for you in Cubase 11. We need a Cubase 13 user to check if this can be reproduced in order to rule out an issue with your Cubase install.

Oh, OK. I assumed Martin was checking on C13. I’ll wait a day or 2 before I take further action. Thanks for your input.

Hi,

I’m sorry, I cant’t reproduce the issue in Cubase 13 on my side.

Martin said he does not have the scrolling problem on his install.
You can try to start Cubase without user preferences in order to see if the problem stems from some weird settings there.

Launch Cubase and then immediately hold Ctrl + Alt + Shift.
In the upcoming dialog select to start Cubase without program preferences.

Hi,

This process bypasses the defaults.xml file from the preferences.

If you want to get completely factory settings, rename/remove the whole Cubase preferences folder, please.

Cubase Preferences folders are:
Mac: ~/Library/Preferences/Cubase X
Win: %appData% \Steinberg\Cubase X_64

Where the X is the Cubase version (for example 13).
