I can’t seem to detach a text box from musical notes / staff. I need to add text in a box that I can move around. Like, At the blank space at the bottom of a chart. as in: “hold for actor’s cue; then follow her motions for the next 2 rubato bars”
In Cubase 15, the Score Editor is closely tied to notes and bars. Free-floating text—which can be completely detached from notes or staves and moved to any empty spot on the page—often behaves rigidly in the classic Cubase score editor, snapping to notes instead.
Insert and move free text
Open the Score Scenar via the Notation menu or the keyboard shortcut.
Select the text tool or the category for symbols/text from the toolbar.
Click at the desired location to place the text.
To avoid collisions or bypass anchoring, use the program settings in the Inspector or the layout options to disable automatic object shifting (“Avoid Collisions”) for the text, if available.
Important note regarding the workflow
Cubase’s classic Score Editor is optimized for MIDI note data.
Cubase reaches its limits when it comes to sophisticated score layout involving freely floating text boxes, performance instructions in empty spaces, or flexible text frames at the page margins.
Many users export the score as MusicXML or PDF and fine-tune the layout in a dedicated notation program such as Dorico or graphics program.
Thanks - I couldn’t find that in the c15 score manual - maybe I didn’t use the right search or something.. I usually put note at the top or bottom of the chart. The work around I came up with, was to export the chart as pdf, then use a pdf editor to add the text in. I could do it in MuseScore, too, but there are mxml translation issues between MS and C15… C13 could do free floating text, BTW.
Guys that read jazz charts usually need some text in there. Like, for this chart I did, you need to tell them to not play the rhythm patterns and stops during solos, which is pretty common..
PS - Please — can you tie the del signo sign to the coda signs (under repeat sections) , for sizing?
To adjust the size of a Segno or Coda symbol in MuseScore and link the jump logic with repeats, use the Properties panel and the jump settings.
Set up symbols and skip logic
Open the Repeats & Jumps palette.
Drag the segno to the start position of the jump.
Place the “To Coda” at the point where the jump is triggered.
Place the actual Coda symbol at the target section (concluding part).
Insert the D.S. al Coda at the appropriate bar position.
Adjust the size of the Segno and Coda signs
Click the respective Coda or Segno symbol in the score.
Open the Properties panel on the right.
Change the size there in the element’s section using the numerical value or the arrow keys. Alternatively, the global default can be adjusted via the menu: Formatting > Style > Text Styles.
Include repetitions within the jump
Click on the jump mark (e.g., the inserted D.S. al Coda).
Open the Properties window.
Check the “Include repeats” (or “Play repeats”) box to ensure the repeated section is correctly accounted for when jumping back.
