Can I change from a guitar to drums on a single stave? - as I can with Sibelius

I have just got Dorico 6. Can I change from a guitar to drums (and back to guitar) on a single stave? - as I can with Sibelius - with the instrument sounds changing appropriately. I’ve tried and so far failed to do this in Dorico, but it is surely possible. I have just done it very easily in an old version of Sibelius (Sibelius image attachment is attached).

I hope someone can advise me. Thanks in advance!

No solution, but even if it was possible the proof reader won’t like it. The instrument change for one player is … pretty racy.

Thanks for your quick response, although your answer is disappointing, especially as I’ve just paid to upgrade to Dorico Pro 6, and I managed to do what I want on an old 2018 version of Sibelius. Today, there are many situations where a guitarist is called upon to use his guitar as a drum. ‘Percussive guitar’ is a huge area for the modern guitarist, and it is often better and simpler to use one one stave rather than two, particularly if switching back and forth in short passages between guitar and percussion. Unfortunately, I’m going to have to back to Sibelius to complete this project. :frowning:

I have never used drum kits in a project, but I was able to create a simple project where the guitar switches to drums and back:

Yes, that is perfectly doable, as long as you choose to show your percussion in a kit that’s presented in a 5-line-staff (layout options >Players >Percussion)

In Setup mode, create 1 player, give them both a guitar and a drum kit:

Then, in Write mode, in Galley view, add music to the appropriate staff:

In the part layout, you’ll see the instrument changes.

  1. Go to Setup tab. Create the guitar player.

  1. Then click the + sign on the top right corner of the blue box. Search for “drum” and you’ll get the Drum Set (Basic). Click Add.

  1. Now you have one player playing both instruments:

  1. Return to the Write tab, select View > Galley View and write your music to both guitar and drum set staves, as you can see in the post above this one.

  2. When you return to the Page View you get the desired result.

Just give the player both a Guitar and a Drumset , and enter the music in Galley View

{Edit} @PjotrB was quicker

Thanks! It’s reassuring to know that it’s possible. Could you please send me a Dorico file of the image file attached? This will help expedite my understanding of how to create the same in my project. If there are any YouTube videos or ‘how to’ articles, I’d also be grateful for any links.

No problem, here you are:

Welcome to Dorico! This isn’t directly related to your question, but one thing to be aware of as a new Dorico user is that Dorico makes a distinction between musical content and the engraving on the page. Understanding this will help make the transition a little smoother.

When you look at Galley or Fill view, you see the music without regards to paper. In some sense, you can say it’s spread out. In these views each instrument/section has its own staff regardless if they’re played by a single player. This allows you to focus on the music alone without needing to worry about the page at the same time. Switching to page view, which shows a particular layout (i.e. definitions for applying the music to paper), will automatically merge staves for players with more than one instrument and as directed by any auto-condensing settings.

There’s a lot that’s different in Dorico. There are many videos on the Dorico YT channel and of course this forum is excellent for questions. This video is focused on making the switch from Sibelius.

Yes, that works. Thanks!

Simple when you know how, eh. Thanks!

I realise now that the guitarist for whom I am arranging the music prefers guitar tablature, so what I would like is a 6-line guitar tablature stave changing to a 5-line drum stave, which is possible in Sibelius (see attached image), but which does not seem possible in Dorico. I hope I am wrong in thinking this and that someone tells me that Dorico can do the same thing (if not better!).

I’m sorry, I cannot get instrument change between TAB and 5-line-Staff drums to work…
