Can I have Cubase and Interface console active at same time?

Hello,
I would prefer to audition, adjust preamp settings, levels etc in the UA Apollo console while I am playing the track through my DAW (Cubase 8 Pro )when recording guitars and bass. However, the moment that I click on and select the UA console, I am unable to access or hear Cubase. If I try and adjust something in the UA console, the Cubase transport control disappears and Cubase stops working. Is there a way round this in settings or somewhere? Thanks in advance!

Set-up: Apollo Twin interface, IMac, Cubase 8 Pro
