I can import any number of audio files at one time. But when importing midi tracks, as far as I know, I have to import one midi track at a time. It asks about ‘creating a new…’ can’t recall; I always say no. Then it comes into the project with a new instrument player (Halion). If I import 20 midi tracks, then there’s 20 versions of Halion. Why can’t I just import all the midi tracks at once and assign instruments and midi channels to them after they are in the project? It would be so much more convenient and faster. I have to change most of them to Groove Agent or Kontakt or whatever.
I’m hoping that I just don’t know how to do this, but if that isn’t it, then I’d like to request this feature in the future. Thanks.
Hi,
How do you import the MIDI Tracks? Do you mean Import MIDI Files? Or do you mean an import from other project?
Yes, I import into the project I’m working in, from, let’s say, a folder on my desktop. It’s not another project.
I did just find kind of a half solution. I reduce the size of my Cubase window so I can open a folder on my desktop. I then drag the midi files into the project window. It still doesn’t allow me to drag any more than on at a time, But at least I can avoid creating a new instrument channel when I use the midi import function. I can now create instrument channels for each individual track without having to delete multiple instances of Halion. So this is a partial solution; the full solution would be being able to drag more than one midi file into the project at a time; like you can with audio files. Thanks for the response Martin.
In Edit > Preferences > MIDI > MIDI File, set Destination to MIDI Tracks or Instrument Tracks inside of HALion
Thanks Paul, but that didn’t change anything. I still can’t select more than one midi file at a time; also this setting in the prefs still creates a new version of Halion for every import. Maybe a feature request is in order.
Is it possible for Steinberg to create a way to import multiple midi files without assigning them to an instrument? So I can import ten midi tracks all at once and just assign instruments to them after. Would be a big time saver. Thanks.
Hi,
If you select the MIDI Tracks option, it will not create an instrument while import.
To import a midi file, I go to import, the little box comes up asking me if I want to create a new project; I always say no; it imports my midi file and always creates a Halion instrument with it. I cannot import any more than one file at a time and each time it creates a new Halion instrument; so ten midi files…ten versions of Halion. But I did find a work around for all the Halion instruments. I open the folder of midi files on the desktop and resize so I can see both the folder on the desktop and the Cubase project. I then just drag them into the project. There is no instrument creation then. (it also brings in it’s sysex file on a separate track; I just delete it) So now, I can create an instrument Halion or Kontakt or whatever I choose and assign the midi file to it. So I’m almost there…but not quite.
I still can’t drag more than one midi file at a time. If it’s two or three, that’s fine, But if it’s ten or more, it’s time consuming. Therein lies the issue. That’s the feature I’d like to see in the next iteration of Cubase.
Sorry Martin, I did change the Midi Track option and it does not create an instrument track; so I don’t need to drag from the desktop. Thank for that.
So now we just need to be able to import more than one midi file at a time, like we do with audio.
